Daniela was the perfect tour guide. She was so knowledgeable about all the history behind not only the art in the city but the Roman Empire, Christianity and about its people. She was so personable and kept all of us including two young college students engaged in all there was to learn. She even educated them on the best places to shop and recommended some of the best places to eat in Rome. It was so wonderful having our own private guide for our small group that we felt like we were traveling with a friend who had lived in this city since the beginning of time. “A rare treat in Florence”
We had been to Italy two times before as a couple, and through a recommendation hired Icon to plan our 8 day family itinerary through Italy in 2013. We were staying just outside of Florence and really wanted to explore the entire region in-depth instead of driving to multiple cities. Our first day in Florence started with a rare opportunity to walk the secret Georgio Vasari Corridor which was used by the Medici family to traverse the city without being seen. This long passage which connects the Palazzo Vecchio with the Palazzo Pitti is not open to the general public and access is only granted to large groups through an Italian tour operator. Our Icon guide arranged for a private visit, and we walked across the Arno River and through the city from above with no one else but our family of 5. The following days included dinner with a local wine maker, a visit to the rarely visited Museo dell Opera del Duomo, where we were able to see up close sculptures by Michelangelo and Donatello, and again we were the only ones in the gallery. This was better than the mobs of people in the Uffizi Museum. The next day we had dinner in Teatro del Sale, a private club with a canteen and theatre. Inside were a mix of locals that varied from art restorers to bankers. For 15 euros we enjoyed a buffet of fresh pastas, grilled meats, sautéed vegetables and all kinds of salads. Our time in the countryside was equally satisfying with day-trips to waterfalls, quaint villages with world class master pieces hidden away, and amazing markets. I cannot say enough about the level of service and attention to details we received from the entire Icon staff.

“Worth every penny - like we had our own scholar traveling with us.”
We were on a tight schedule and decided last minute to book a private tour for to minimize lines and getting around. Picked Icon upon a friends recommendation. Smartest move we made! Sarah was great. not only did she zip us around with ease, the best part was all of the preparation and knowledge she shared about the art, arch. & history. Main spots we hit were Pantheon, Colleseu, Forum in morning. and Vatican in the afternoon. She knows how to avoid long lines, which quick routes to go by taxis, (like "go to the gelato place on the corner where the vatican choir goes after practice, not to the vatican!" saved us half an hour in the tax). She explained which pieces of art were most significant and why, told us what to look for in the various works and the stories behind the places. She had a whole 'kit' of drawings and pictures to enhance the history and art lesson She was an absolute gem. We would have totally blown it in Rome on our own. Thanks Sarah, Thanks ICON Tours!

“Highlight of our trip to Italy”
