This half-day excursion of the Lisboa Wine Region departs from Lisbon and heads towards the Eastern coast where we visit the "Western Most Vineyard of Continental Europe". This is considered one of the most endangered wine growing regions of the world, and also one of the best kept secrets of Europe's old world vines.
Once a major player in Portugal's wine industry, this sub-region of Lisboa has begun to enjoy a minor renaissance in the early 21st century among those who know Iberian wines. The vineyards here are just a fraction of what they were 70 years ago, and cannot compete with the mass-produced fruity and oaky styles preferred by the majority of modern wine consumers.
The terroir has a particular micro-climate, with sandy-clay soils and proximity to the Atlantic ocean which cause many to comment on the aromas and tastes of the sea prevalent in the wines.
These grapes near the coast are grown on the only surviving un-grafted, old-world vines in the world. They can produce robust, tannic reds from Ramisco grapes and a local strain of Malvasia that has delicious roundness with flavors of peaches and apricots.
Our tasting takes place at an historic estate built in 1720 where a former Arabian Horse farm was converted in 2006 by the eccentric owner who is still making wine with at the age of 102 years.
There are more than 13 red and white wines in the portfolio of this boutique estate. During the tasting we will do our best to taste at least 8 of the wines, which are all savory, balanced and very fragrant. To accompany the tasting, there will be a hearty selection of locally produced cheeses, cured meats, breads and olives and preserves.
During a tour of the vineyard and cellar you will discover how winemakers are able to grow grapes in the sandy soil, and how this vineyard was saved from the Phylloxera parasite that ravaged Europe's vineyards in the late 19th century, and has since effected every viticultural region on earth except this tiny part of Portugal.
Before heading back to Lisbon we will take a short drive up the coast to visit the surfers paradise of Guincho Beach, with its wide swaths of golden, wind blown dunes. There will also be time for photos at Cabo da Roca where rocky cliffs over 100 meters high give us an excellent view of jagged-crystalline megaliths jutting from the blue sea below. During the great Age of Discovery this dramatic, western most point of Europe was literally “the end of the world” to both the explorers who set sail for unknown destinations, and for the slaves who were brought back for distribution throughout Europe.
