rome’s most prized secret art collection
Reopened after 17 years of vast restorations, the Borghese Gallery houses a world-class collection of treasures that span two millennia and can be visited in two or three hours.
This walking tour is a rare occasion to witness a museum which limits the number of daily visitors to behold some of Rome’s most famous masterpieces. Encircling Bernini’s sculpture of Apollo and Daphne is a dizzying sensation that should not be missed. Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath is a chilling moment into the mind of a murdering artist. Titian’s priceless Sacred and Profane Love which was refused a purchase price by the Rothchilds that exceeded the value of the entire museum.
With one of our expert guides you will experience this palace with insider stories on Cardinal Scipione Borghese and his elite circle of friends, whose artistic taste influenced the careers and value of artists both living and dead. After the museum we will explore a bit of the vast the Villa Borghese Gardens, (80 hectares or 148 acres), a landscape designed in the naturalistic English manner containing a number of buildings, used by Scipione Borghese as a suburban villa suburban for lavish parties at the edge of Rome, and to house his art collection.
At the end of the tour we would suggest that you continue on your own through the Borghese gardens to visit the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna. Inside you will find the largest collection of famous paintings and sculptures of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Italy. Included are works by Klimt, Chirico and Modigliani.
