The U-shaped palazzo that houses the Uffizi gallery was originally designed by the famous 16th century architect and painter Giorgio Vasari, as government offices for Cosimo I de'Medici, the grand duke of Tuscany. It was Cosimo's son, Francesco I who re-purposed the top floor into a gallery, and it was later opened to the general public as a museum in 1769.
Over the centuries this magnificent collection has remarkably survived two World Wars, bombings and a disastrous flood in 1966 and another in 2007. Today, the museum has over 1.5 million visitors per year, and it's recognized as not only the oldest, but "the most famous museum in the world". Make the most of your visit on our tour which skips the ticket line with a dedicated guide who can bring these treasures to life in lively relevant detail.
